Ford plays the arc with remarkable restraint, allowing Book's growing affection for Amish life and Rachel to register with subtlety.


Kelly McGillis is magnetic as Rachel. Her performance is composed yet deeply expressive, portraying a woman torn between duty and desire. McGillis manages to convey the moral weight of her community’s values even as she lets flickers of longing escape.
